Congratulations to Alex Potter, Barry Tierney, Conor O’Coigligh and Rian Murphy, Ardscoil Rís, who have qualified for the All Ireland Linguistic Olympiad in DCU.

Four bright sparks from Transition Year in Ardscoil Rís have qualified for the final of the All Ireland Linguistic Olympiad. The students will compete individually and as a team for the national trophy and for a chance to represent Ireland in Slovenia at the International Linguistics Olympiad in July. This is a huge achievement for the boys and Ardscoil Ris as over 700 of the best lateral thinkers from secondary schools across Ireland took part in the competition. The international contest sees young scholars test their minds against the world’s toughest puzzles in language, logic and linguistics.

Students representing schools in 23 counties participated in preliminary rounds of the challenge earlier this month, with the top 100 problem-solvers making it through to the national finals on 20th March in DCU. The Limerick school is delighted to have four of its students reaching the top 100.

The All-Ireland Linguistics Olympiad challenges students to develop their own strategies for solving problems in fascinating real languages from around the globe. Students must use their ingenuity to solve puzzles such as deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics; interpreting Tenji, the Japanese equivalent of Braille; and writing the names of football teams in Chinese. No prior knowledge of linguistics or languages is required: even the hardest problems require only logical ability, patient work, and a willingness to think around corners.
