Ardscoil Rís Hurling Academy

This September Ardscoil Rís launched a hurling academy in the school. The aim of this exciting new adventure is to contribute to the development of hurling in the area and to help achieve standards of excellence in the training and playing of hurling. Initially the academy focused on 2 aspects. An exciting new Transition Year module was launched which allows our students complete a course in “coaching and GAA administration” in conjunction with Limerick Institute of Technology . In late September the school also hosted a primary schools hurling blitz. A total of 9 schools from Clare And Limerick competed for the inaugural Ardscoil Rís Academy Perpetual Trophy . The event was held on the school field on a perfect day for hurling. The standard of hurling was enjoyed by a large gathering of parents and supporters in the September sunshine. The skills on view were a credit to the players, their coaches, their clubs and schools.

Members of the Limerick Senior Hurling Team were present as past pupil Ollie Moran joined his brother Niall (staff member ) to show his support for his alma mater. Young hurler of the year Seamus Hickey also attended.

The Chairman of the City Bord na Og DK O'Brien was also present with Gerry Bennis , schools GAA liaison officer and development office Pat Culhane . Patrickswell NS automatically qualified for the semi finals by topping their groups after an action packed morning of closely contested group games. They were joined by Clare side Sixmilebridge NS who defeated Ballybrown NS for the last final four spot. Patrickswell defeated Adare to reach the final where they met Christ the King school from Caherdavin who defeated Sixmilebridge in the game of the tournament. Patrickswell emerged victorious after a masterful performance led by their Captain Cian Lynch.

Limerick Senior Hurler (and Hurler of the Year), Seamus Hickey, presents the hurling academy trophy to Cian Lynch, Captain of the victorious Patrickswell team.

The GAA department in the school is grateful for all the support and effort which made the occasion so memorable. Special mention to Sean Condon , Colm Honan and Pat Culhane for refereeing, to the principals and teachers of all the schools involved and to the principal Brid De Brún , teachers students of Ardscoil Rís for all their assistance.
