Pastoral Care and Discipline
A clearly defined and well-resourced system of pastoral care and discipline is maintained in Ardscoil Rís, the focus of which is the welfare of the pupils. The system is reviewed on a regular basis and has undergone major developments over the last few years.
In the school, each class has its own Class Teacher who has special responsibility for the pupils in his/her charge. The Year-Head maintains regular contact with parents and pupils through the Christmas and Summer reports, parent-teacher meetings and, when required, hrough specially arranged meetings with individual parents. The Deputy Principal and Principal are actively involved in the pastoral care process and meet weekly with Year-Heads to monitor progress.
Social, Personal and Health Education
The SPHE programme is taught in the Junior Cycle up to third year. It is a non-exam subject which aims to educate pupils in areas such as self-esteem, social interaction, personal health, relationships, mental health, personal safety and study skills. Each year group follows an age appropriate programme which has been designed by the SPHE teaching team.
The school has a dedicated SPHE classroom individual, pair and group work can be facilitated and where pupils have access to a variety of resources. Each term the SPHE team select a topic such as nutrition, healthy living or smoking. Pupils complete projects in these areas.
The SPHE programme is proving to be a most positive experience for both pupils and teachers.
Supervised Study
Supervised study is available within the school from 4 to 6pm on Mondays and Tuesdays and 3.15 to 5.15 on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Study weeks are also available during term holidays for examination classes.
